    • "John August Rondot, a prominent pioneer of Washington, Township, Allen County, Indiana, was born January 6, 1821 in Athesans, France, the eldest son of Claude Francis and Marie Jeanne (Pataillot) Rondot, of France.

      He left his native country June 14, 1846, emigrated to America and reached Fort Wayne in July 1850, by way of Canada, where he met and married Dorothea Marie Blanchette of Belle Riviere, Ontario, Canada. Soon after their marriage they migrated to Perry Township, Allen, County, Ind. where his father bought 80 acres of land on the east side of Coldwater Road, in section 34, 3/4 miles north of the Dupont Road. They worked together, clearing the land and built a farm home, which they shared. In March 1851, John purchased 25 acres of this land from his father for his own home. On October 9th, 1852, he along with his father and brothers Charles A., and John Baptist, made Declarations of intent to become citizens.

      In June 1856 John A. purchased a 40 acre farm in Jefferson Township, section 7, just east of New Haven on the old Edgerton road, where he lived with his growing family, until April 30, 1863 when they removed to Washington, Township, section 4, on a 75 acre farm, near the old Bethel Church and Cemetery. They raised a large family of seven sons and eight daughters. Joseph E. born, 4-6-1852; Charles A. born, 4-9-1854; Julius A. born, 7-11-1855; Eugene F. born, 2-18-1857; Emile F. born, - -1859; Philisee J. born 3-11-1860; Josephine A. born 6-21-1861; Mary A. born, 6-11-1863; Philomene _. born 10-18-1864; Frances A. born 2-12-1867; Sophia M. born 12-30-1868; Amelia E. born, 8-2-1870; Auguste J. born, 9-11-1872; Julia M. born 4-28-1874; and Frank August born 10-7-1875; Daughter Mary died when she was about 18 years old, and the youngest son Frank August at 21 years of age.

      Mr. Rondot and his wife Dorothea were members of the Catholic Church. His occupation has always been that of a farmer, and was always active in agricultural affairs. Mrs. Rondot (Dorothea) died, on Christmas day 1897, at the farm home, and is buried at St. Vincent's cemetery, on the old Auburn road. He continued to live at the farm home until his death on January 30, 1899 and is buried beside his wife.

      This closes a chapter on a hard working, worthy and valuable citizens of this community, who left many children and grand children to carry forward the Rondot name." [30]
