    Notes
    • Thomas Dimock is believed to have crossed from England to Boston Harbor in 1635. He settled first in Dorchester, where he was chosen as a town selectman. After three years in Dorchester, he and his wife began a series of removes toward Plymouth Colony. By 1639, he had arrived at an unpopulated area on the shoulder of Cape Cod known only by its Indian name of Mattachese. There he built a home and reared his family. The town of Barnstable sprang up there. Over the years, Thomas Dimock served as land commissioner, military leader, magistrate, colonial court deputy, church deacon, ruling elder and more. In the words of Barnstable historian Amos Otis, "The name of Thomas Dimock cannot be separated from that of Barnstable." Historian Richard Cobb specifically suggests Thomas Dimock as one who may have chosen the name, Barnstable. Of Thomas Dimock, Otis said: "He came over, not to amass wealth, or to acquire honor; but that he might worship his God according to the dictates of his own conscience; and that he and his posterity might here enjoy the blessings of civil and religious liberty. His duties to his God, to his country, and to his neighbor, he never forgot, never knowingly violated." [5]
